9/18/2009 - Tri-county Kentucky brings in 1/2 of the student body!

This is a story told in our scholorship application for 2009 school year. It is written by Ali Collins, a senior at Corbin High School. Ali went on to win our scholorship and is attending Northern Ky University.

In many high schools today, teenagers often struggle with self-mutalition and suicide. My high school is no different. During November, I came across a Christian based organization called, “ To Write Love on Her Arms,” whose whole mission is to stop self mutilation and suicide amongh teens. As I was reading the heartfelt stories of the surviviors on this website I felt the Lord tell me to get our school to participate in “National to Write Love on Her Arms Day.” On this day everyone writes love on their arms to raise awareness for the cause.

I spoke with my mom, who is also a guidance counselor and she suggested we make it a coalition between First Priority and the guidance office and hand out pamphlets about suicide prevention and awareness I approve the idea with my campus coach and brought it before my First Pirority club at the next meeting. As a club, we made posters, hung signs, and made an announcement to make people aware of this day.

On that Thursday, we had a special First Priority meeting that I led, where we discussed the organization TWOHA, and what we could do to prevent self mutilation and suicide in our school. Over half of the student body proceeded to write, “love” on their arms and we also handed out numerous pamphlets. If thruough these efforts, only one student realized his/her life was worth living and they were loved iti was well worth it!
